Stabbing outside Prince Albert liquor store results in one year jail sentence

Jan 29, 2025 | 5:00 PM

A woman who approached a stranger outside a Prince Albert liquor store and stabbed him three times claimed he had bothered her underage sister at a party.

Those details were heard Wednesday afternoon at Prince Albert Provincial Court.

Jasmine Denton, 21, appeared by video and received a 12-month jail sentence plus nine months probation. While initially charged with aggravated assault, she entered a guilty plea to assault causing bodily harm.

On June 28, 2024, members of the Prince Albert Police Service’s Proactive Policing Unit were called to the city’s Cornerstone area and that’s where they found the victim, who was suffering from injuries to the chest and abdominal areas.

The 26-year-old man was highly intoxicated and initially resisted offers to be sent to hospital. He said he had been stabbed outside Georgie’s Cold Beer and Wine store. The man had been one of three people inside a taxi that stopped outside the business and upon leaving the store was approached by Denton, whom he did not know.

The man would eventually consent to being transported to hospital. Crown Prosecutor Doug Howell noted minor injuries to spleen and liver areas.

“There was a recovery from the injury,” he said.

Denton was arrested on July 2 and admitted to using a pair of scissors to stab the victim.

In addition to the assault charge, Denton entered guilty pleas to a number of breach related charges.

According to legal aid lawyer Estelle Hjertaas, Denton admitted to suffering from issues related to anger and addictions.

“Once she’s triggered, she just stays mad,” she said.

Hjertaas also described Denton’s personal history of homelessness, growing up in group homes and anxiety created by separation from her family.

Judge Daunt applauded Denton on accepting the jail sentence and on Denton’s own desire to seek out programming.

Noting Denton’s young age, Howell said the sentence offers an opportunity to push the reset button and look for a better way forward.

“And I think she’s on the road to doing that,” he said.
