Controlling herbicide resistant wild oats in wheat

Jan 28, 2025 | 4:50 PM

A new product will be available for growers this year that is a dual mode wild oat herbicide that also controls herbicide resistant wild oats.

ADAMA developed the product CAZADO over the course of seven years at the company’s global research and development complex in Israel.

This included three years of small plot research followed by 2024 product field trials with 44 farmers across Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta through the The Health Canada Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA) Research Authorization program.

ADAMA Herbicide Portfolio Manager Ambrely Ralph said the science and trials show CAZADO provides crop safety, weed control and reliability in wheat crops.

“As well, its unique active ingredient mixture and formulation, using canola oil instead of petroleum-based products, not only enhances its effectiveness and proactively delays future onset of herbicide resistance but also reduces its environmental impact,” Ralph said.

The efficacy of CAZADO was confirmed through testing protocols conducted by numerous third-party contract research organizations throughout Canada over the past three years. It was tested across different growing conditions, looking at different soil types, moisture conditions and other variables to make sure it met the highest standards of performance and reliability for growers.

CAZADO will be available to Western Canadian growers through their preferred retailers in time for 2025 spring wheat application.
