Mintos fall to Blazers in first game back from break

Jan 9, 2025 | 12:22 PM

The Prince Albert Mintos had a tough start to the new year on Wednesday night, falling 5-3 to the defending back-to-back provincial champions Saskatoon Blazers at the Art Hauser Centre.

The loss was P.A.’s fourth in a row, and first game since Dec. 22.

The Mintos jumped out to 2-0 following the first period thanks to markers from Luke Senick and Carter Cole, but the script was flipped in the second when the Blazers answered back with a pair of goals of their own to tie it 2-2 entering the third.

There, Saskatoon kept on the gas and converted early, scoring less than 2:30 into the frame with a powerplay marker from Prince Albert Raiders’ prospect Eric Grandberg. Shortly after, the Blazers struck twice more scoring 31 seconds apart, making it 5-2.

In the back half of the third, Cole managed to tickle twine once again to begin the comeback, but P.A.’s efforts fell short as Saskatoon hung on for a 5-3 win.

COMPLETE BOX SCORE

Jayden Blanchette was between the pipes for the Mintos, turning aside 28 of 33 shots as Prince Albert falls to 15-12-2 (W-L-OTL) on the campaign.

The Green and Gold return to action this weekend when they travel to Saskatoon to face the Contacts for a Sunday matinee. Puck drop is set for 2:00 p.m. at Merlis Belsher Place.
