Collision puts car on its side near Shenanigans

The intersection of Sixth Avenue West and 22nd Street next to Shenanigans was closed to traffic this morning as a two-vehicle collision put one vehicle on its side on a residential lawn.

Parkland Ambulance confirmed two people were taken to Victoria Hospital with minor injuries.

Police and fire services were also called.

This is not the first collision recently at that location.

Darren Solomon, Ward 8 city councillor, raised it as a concern several months ago and asked the Public Works department for some statistics and possible ways to mitigate any risk.

The response was part of Monday’s council agenda package and shows that after SGI claim statistics were reviewed, there were 22 reported collisions between 2012 and 2021.

This puts it as about average when compared to other signalized intersections.

There is a crosswalk at that intersection that allows people to walk cross Sixth Avenue and a second cross walk a half a block away for students going to École St. Anne.

Traffic sightlines are an issue for drivers making the same crossing, however. Just before Sixth Avenue crosses 22nd Street, there is a hill making it difficult for waiting drivers to see the traffic coming and in the mornings, there is a bump in traffic volumes for parents dropping their children off.

Administration said that other measures could be taken, such as pulling traffic further from the intersection or installing lights.

Residents along the street have said that the volume of traffic in that area has increased as people try to avoid using 28th Street to go to Victoria Hospital or if they are heading down the hill towards the West Flat.

Also nearby, three apartments are nearing completion on Woodbridge Drive, but the city is also planning to pave 25th Street, which connects Woodbridge Drive to 10th Avenue and will create a full intersection right by the hospital.

That completion is to accommodate the building of the Ronald McDonald House.
