The case that dates back to August, 2023 at Ahtahkakoop Cree Nation, was initially scheduled for a one-week trial.

According to facts read in court, the victim went to buy drugs from Ahenakew and during the exchange, Ahenakew in turn asked the victim for help towing a vehicle parked at a neighbour’s house.

An argument occurred and that’s when Ahenakew pulled out a gun and shot the other man in the head.

The victim was air lifted by STARS air ambulance to hospital in Saskatoon and continues to recover.

Ahenakew was arrested about a week later after police executed a search warrant at a home in the community.

The case was adjourned to March 7 for sentencing submissions. Court heard a victim impact statement may be read at that time. The judge in the case ordered a presentence report which will canvass Gladue factors and Ahenakew’s upbringing.

This would not be Ahenakew’s first conviction involving a gun. In October, 2012, he received a two-year jail sentence for robbery with a firearm.
