The Hunger Games return to Prince Albert

A friendly, yet very competitive event that helps raise needed food and money for the Prince Albert food bank will make its return this week.

The second annual Hunger Games takes place Dec. 18 at the Prince Albert Grand Council Urban Centre. Ric Sanderson, Director of Justice for the Prince Albert Grand Council’s Justice Unit, told paNOW that based on the success of last year’s event, a decision was made to do it again.

“We had a lot of things we learned last year and how to improve it,” he said.

Joining the cadets, RCMP, city police, fire department, and Parkland Ambulance will be conservation and corrections officers, as well as a team assembled by PAGC Grand Chief Brian Hardlotte.

In addition to the physical challenges that come with volleyball and various relay races, teams are also busy now collecting donations for the food bank. The Christmas Spirit Award will be presented to the group that raises the most funds to purchase hampers

“At this time of year is when people really need it the most and you know everybody is kind of worn thin with donations and things like that but still we gotta find time to get some funds and some food to the food bank because I’m sure they’re running low at this time of year,” Sanderson said.

Organizers are partnering again this year with Harold’s IGA and people who wish to donate food, can either call in or go to the store to buy food hampers. Every dollar spent can then be used as valuable points to whatever team you wish to support.

“So for example, if you want to support the Parkland ambulance and you buy ten dollars worth of items, you’re basically putting 10 points towards Parkland ambulance to get closer to the Christmas spirit award”

In 1996, Sanderson, a former RCMP officer, started a cadet program called the First Nations Cadet Corps. He is presently instructing Red Earth, Sturgeon Lake and PAGC Cadets. The games were initially created as as a way to bring cadets and cops together to have some fun competitions to build up relations.

“So what we want to do is expose these kids to all the different job opportunities within the province and this gives us a chance to see all the different careers they could be looking at in the future,” he said.

While Parkland Ambulance won last year’s physical event, it was the Sturgeon Lake First Nation Cadets Corp. who raised the most money and food items.

The event on Wednesday at the Prince Albert Grand Council Urban Center will start at 5 p.m. and the first event will start about 15 minutes later.
