Birch Hills staff won’t share election decision

A staff member at the Town of Birch Hills said they are too busy to share the results of a court-ordered election recount heard at Prince Albert King’s Bench on Tuesday.

Staff members from the town attended the court hearing today regarding a challenge between two candidates in a recent election. When paNOW phoned to inquire on the court decision, the receptionist said information would not be released to media.

The Nov. 13 municipal election results were posted to the Birch Hills Facebook page.

When contacted at the courthouse, a staff member there said the candidates are 18 votes apart.

Both candidates requested a judicial recount, which is allowed under the applicable provincial legislation.

A recount also took place between the mayoral candidates who were 86 votes apart.

When asked why they wouldn’t share the final results or even pass on the message to the CAO, the woman who answered the phone said Town Hall staff are too busy.

According to the town’s Facebook Post, Stewart Adams received 213 votes and was elected mayor while John Herd received 127 votes.

Web searches reveal that there are six councillors, which puts the recount between Bria Lindsay at 130 votes and Melvin Rosteski, who got 148 votes.

The decision of the King’s Bench judge remains unknown. Media are not allowed to observe the judge’s count, according to the Cities Act.
