Dec 5, 2024 | 3:53 PM

A Northern Saskatchewan school bus driver is behind bars after being caught driving drunk while on the job.

The incident happened on Nov. 19 at around 3:45 p.m. when Buffalo River Dene Nation security officers and school employees saw the school bus driver showing signs of impairment.

They attempted to stop the man from entering the bus, however, he managed to get behind the wheel and drive off with around 50 children inside.

Officers managed to locate the bus a short time later. No children were found on the bus, as investigation determined they had already been dropped off along the bus’s route. When police then turned their attention to the driver, they also noticed signs of impairment and arrested him.

As a result of continued investigation, and consultation with Crown prosecutors, RCMP charged the 45-year-old driver from Buffalo River Dene Nation on Dec. 3 with operating a conveyance while impaired and operating a conveyance with a blood alcohol concentration exceeding 80 mg per 100 ml of blood.

His driver’s license was also suspended, pending court outcome.

The driver is set to appear in a Dillon courtroom on Dec. 18.
