SGI shines traffic spotlight on seasonal safe ride options

Dec 4, 2024 | 11:28 AM

The holiday party season is underway, and SGI is reminding drivers in the province about the options available for getting home safe.

In a press release, Chief Operating Officer of the Auto Fund, JP Cullen said December is a time for celebration but last year, 29 people were killed and 338 were injured in impaired driving collisions so its important to give the gift of a safe, sober ride home.

“We know that many drivers in Saskatchewan will be attending or hosting holiday parties. If you’re making plans to celebrate the season, we encourage you to make use of the safe ride options you have available, so we can all get home safe,” said Cullen.

SGI suggests designating a sober driver or volunteering to be one, calling a sober friend or family member, taking the bus, catching a cab or designated driving service or simply staying the night.

There are also seasonal safe ride options like Operation Red Nose which began in Prince Albert on Nov. 29. The service has volunteers return people home in their own vehicles. It’s free to use but donations are accepted and then redistributed to local initiatives.

Since its creation in 1984, Operation Red Nose has offered over 2.4 million safe rides across Canada and redistributed more than $36 million to local youth and amateur sports initiatives.

Those wanting to use the service or volunteer can call 306-763-6673.

Operation Red Nose runs until 3 a.m. on Dec. 31.
