Guards seize package containing over $200K worth of contraband at Sask Pen

Dec 4, 2024 | 4:40 PM

Guards at the Saskatchewan Penitentiary made a large seizure over the weekend.

According to a release, a package containing contraband and unauthorized items was seized on Saturday at the multi-level security federal institution. When opened, guards found methamphetamine, THC, a cell phone and charger, and SIM cards inside, which has an estimated institutional value of $207,810.

The seizure comes after guards seized $107,000 worth of contraband in October, and an additional $128,750 worth of unauthorized items back in August. In 2024, the total value of illegal contraband seized at the prison reached between eight and ten million dollars.

Corrections Canada noted the use of a number of tools such as scanners and drug detection dogs in response to the rise in seizures, however, drones are becoming a fast, growing problem at the institution.

Drones have been reported to be dropping ceramic knives, which are immune to the jail’s metal detectors, and even screwdrivers, which may allow inmates to access secure areas.

Following the most recent seizure, the Prince Albert Police Service was notified and workers at the Saskatchewan Penitentiary are investigating.
