Goudy discusses new role

Melfort MLA Todd Goudy enjoys first week as Speaker

The MLA for the Melfort constituency is adjusting to his new role as Speaker of the Legislative Assembly.

Todd Goudy was named to the position after being the only person to put his name forward.

Goudy has spent just over a week in the new role, and he told northeastNOW he’s excited for the responsibility. Goudy said partisanship in the Legislature, and society as a whole, has increased in the past few years.

“Getting along with people on both sides of the house and being able to collaborate together and to be a bit of a peacemaker referee is an important role for the speaker, I believe, these days,” Goudy said.

The role of the Speaker is not to play favourites or take sides, and Goudy believes he can do that going forward. Goudy called the first week as speaker “kind of surreal”, saying that it’s a little strange going through the Speaker when addressing the Legislature, to becoming the Speaker.

“I wasn’t really a guy who thought I would ever see myself in this position, and yet I really enjoyed it,” Goudy said of his first week in the role. He said there was a lot to learn, and he has to be keenly aware of the rules during Question Period, but he enjoyed dipping his toes in the water.

Goudy credited the staff for helping him out in his new role, and said Premier Scott Moe and Opposition Leader Carla Beck have also helped make his job easier.

“Without having such great staff and the leaders of the different parties in the (Legislature), it would have been a lot more difficult.”

He said he’s thankful to be back in Regina and continue to represent the Melfort constituency. Goudy had been named Government Whip prior to his becoming speaker but is no longer in that role.
