Cold weather to stick around for next day or two

Nov 29, 2024 | 11:20 AM

The cold weather will stick around for a few more days.

Low temperatures in the –30 C range arrived overnight, and we can expect them again Friday into Saturday.

With the wind, it could feel like –40 C in northeast Saskatchewan. Prince Albert could see wind chills around –45 C overnight. The northwest, including North Battleford, won’t be quite as cold as cloud moves in tonight but it will still be around –35 C with the wind overnight.

Environment and Climate Change Canada Scientist Christy Climenhaga told northeastNOW despite the cold temperatures, we aren’t likely to set any records.

Average high temperatures during the day are around –9 C, while daily lows are around –18 C or so.

“We’re well below that, a good ten or so degrees below that,” said Climenhaga.

The temperature seems even colder because it was such a nice fall until recently. Climenhaga said the fall temperatures were above seasonal right through November.

“Most areas (were) in their top five warmest September on record in Saskatchewan, and October (was) above normal as well,” said Climenhaga. “It was a big shift now as we get into some snowfall and some cold weather.”

The cooler-than-normal temperatures should stick around through the remainder of the week. More clouds are expected this weekend, which should moderate the temperatures a little, especially in the overnight hours.

Climenhaga said we can expect snow early next week, but as the snowfall passes through it will bring temperatures up to more seasonal conditions.

“Definitely a little more consistent on the milder side as opposed to the frigid temperatures we’re seeing.”

Climenhaga said it’s important to stay covered during these cold temperatures, as exposed skin can freeze fairly quickly when windchills pick up. She also recommends packing an emergency kit for your vehicle in case you become stranded in the cold weather.
