End of an era: Frank J. Dunn will close when new pool opens

The City of Prince Albert and Saskatchewan Rivers Public School Division are preparing for the bittersweet change that will come within months.

While no firm date has been set as yet, when the new Lake Country Co-op Leisure Centre opens, the Frank J. Dunn Pool at Carlton High School will close.

“The Frank J. Dunn Pool holds a special place in the hearts of many,” said Jody Boulet, Director of Parks, Recreation & Culture for the City of Prince Albert. “While it’s bittersweet to see it retire, the new Lake Country Co-op Leisure Centre will provide even greater opportunities for recreation and education.”

Frank J. Dunn Pool was built in 1973-74 and incorporated into Carlton High School, the largest high school in Saskatchewan as measured by the student population.

It made for easy access for many Prince Albert swimmers and provided recreation for the community as well.

Frank J. Dunn was the owner of P.A.’s Toyota dealership and his son, Frank Dunn Jr., took up the torch, creating a triathlon that still runs every summer in Waskesiu.

The new competitive pool in the Leisure Centre includes an eight-lane, 25 metre wide pool that is 12 feet deep. It has multiple diving boards, something that Dunns as avid swimmers and divers would likely approve of.

As the new pool phases in, the old pool phases out, something that the city and the school division said will be done as seamlessly as possible.

“The Frank J. Dunn Pool has been an iconic part of our school and community life. Its closure is the end of an era, but we’re excited for the future with this exceptional new facility,” said Mike Hurd, Superintendent of Facilities for SRPSD.

The last update on opening for the new pool is sometime in March 2025.
