Developing an African Swine Fever trade recovery program

Nov 14, 2024 | 5:00 PM

In the event of an African Swine Fever (ASF) outbreak, a trade recovery program needs to be developed.

The Canadian Pork Council (CPC) and the Canadian Meat Council (CMC) met with Parliamentarians, government officials, and partners in Ottawa to discuss the issue and other concerns.

The main focus of those meetings was a plan for ASF entering Canada and the need for an ASF trade recovery program to ensure Canada’s pork producers can swiftly regain market access and stabilize the industry in the event of an outbreak.

CPC Chair René Roy said this is very important for the industry.

“By joining forces with the CMC, we presented a united front to advocate for the priorities of the Canadian pork sector. Our conversations emphasized the urgent need to address challenges which are crucial for sustaining and growing our industry,” Roy said

Both councils stressed the importance of a reliable agricultural workforce, urging the government to prioritize solutions that support the sector’s year-round labour needs.

Improved trade access was highlighted as maintaining production and meeting the demands of domestic and international markets is essential.
