Raiders win first shootout of the season in Regina

Nov 6, 2024 | 11:31 AM

After winning a week ago in Regina, the Prince Albert Raiders returned to the Queen City looking for a bounce back game after losing on home ice to Swift Current. Despite one of the weirdest goals you’ll ever see against them, the Raiders battled for a 4-3 shootout victory on the road.

The Raiders scored first and originally Vojtech Vochvest was credited with his first assist and first point as a Raider for starting the play. He gave the puck to Lukas Dragicevic in the middle of the blueline, and he fired a shot towards the goal that hit Jonah Sivertson, and Ty Meunier found the loose puck to score his third of the season at 9:24. The Pats would later score at the end of the period to tie it.

On an offensive zone faceoff, Pats centreman Jaxson Vaughn tied up the Raiders’ centre, Zachary Lansard tapped the puck to the slot for Cole Temple, and he found open space in the slot before sending a changeup on net that slowly rolled into the back of the net.

The Pats opened the second period with one of the weirdest goal you’ll ever see.

Braxton Whitehead was fighting for a puck in the corner left of Max Hildebrand, and Whitehead tried to centre the puck to the slot from behind the goal line. Instead, Whitehead was pokechecked by Ty Sobry, and the puck bounced into the air, off the glass, off the top of the net, off of Hildebrand’s back and into the back of the net at 1:37.

After no penalties in the first, the Raiders killed off a penalty early before they got three straight powerplays of their own. They couldn’t score on the first, but on the second Justice Christensen sent the puck up the left wall for Brayden Dube. He waited for the seam to form, and Dube sent a great pass across the slot for Luke Moroz on the far side of the ice and he onetimed his second of the season into the back of the net at 12:16.

Then with their third powerplay of the game, the Raiders scored once again. Lukas Dragicevic gave the puck to Tomas Mrsic, and Mrsic used his patented wrist shot through traffic for his eighth of the season at 15:42. The Raiders powerplay went 2/4 on the night.

After 2: Raiders 3 – 2 Pats, shots 15-12 Raiders, 25-23 Raiders overall

The Pats would score the lone goal of the third period at 3:52 on their own powerplay. With Brandon Osborne in the box on a tripping call, the Pats would get the cycle going before Zackary Shantz found the puck down the left side with a lot of open space and fired to score and tie the game. Overall, the Raiders penalty kill went 2/3 on the night.

Both teams would get one more powerplay in the third period, and on the Raiders man advantage Aiden Oiring missed an open net when he swatted a rebound through the crease wide.

After 3: Raiders 3 – 3 Pats, shots 10-7 Pats, 33-30 Pats overall

In overtime, the Raiders started the overtime period on the powerplay, but a turnover at the end almost cost the Raiders the game when Jaxsin Vaughn was sprung on a breakaway heading out of the box, but Max Hildebrand made the save. Brayden Dube also had a breakaway for the Raiders, and he fired with enough force to get by the pad of Kelton Pyne, but the puck skittered wide into the corner.

Off to the shootout, round one saw the Pats start with Tye Spencer while the Raiders started with Aiden Oiring, and both men were stopped.

In round two, Tanner Howe was stopped trying to go fivehole, but Tomas Mrsic scored with a wrist shot.

Zachary Shantz was stopped on the third round, negating the need for the Raiders to send another shooter.

FINAL (SO): Raiders 4 – 3 Pats, shots 7-1 Pats, 40-32 Pats overall

The Raiders are off until Saturday when they head to Brandon to take on the Wheat Kings.
