Two men from the La Loche area are facing a laundry list of charges after a firearm and drugs were seized during a traffic stop in La Loche.

RCMP say officers initiated a traffic stop with the vehicle the men were travelling in at around 5:00 a.m. Friday after spotting the passenger not wearing a seatbelt. After police conducted a mandatory alcohol screening, it was discovered that the driver had a few drinks before getting behind the wheel.

The driver was arrested and upon searching the vehicle, officers discovered and seized approximately 30 grams of crack cocaine, a loaded handgun, ammunition, a sum of cash, and alcohol.

As a result of their findings, police also arrested the passenger.

Following their continued investigation, RCMP has charged 21-year-old Ty Park-Fontaine from Clearwater River Dene Nation and 22-year-old Alexander Janvier from La Loche with unsafe storage of a firearm, possession of a weapon for dangerous purpose, unlawful possession of firearm in motor vehicle, unlawful possession of a restricted firearm and prohibited device with ammunition, possession for the purpose of trafficking cocaine, and using a firearm in the commission of an offence.

In addition, Park-Fontaine, who was the driver, is also charged with unauthorized possession of a restricted firearm, knowledge of unauthorized possession of a firearm, operating a conveyance while impaired, and operating a conveyance with a blood alcohol concentration greater than 80 mg%.

The passenger, Janvier, is also charged with unauthorized possession of a restricted firearm and unlawful possession of prohibited device.

Both Park-Fontaine and Janvier made their first appearance in La Loche court on Monday.
