High School trades program builds Safe Home on the Nation

Oct 29, 2024 | 10:30 AM

High School students attending the Canoe Lake Miksiw School (CLMS) have completed the building of a: bungalow style, 1600 sq. ft., 4-bedroom high-performance home as part of the Oskayak Pasikonatanik Project on the Canoe Lake Cree First Nation (CLCFN).

The Oskāyak Pasikonatanik (building our nation) Project is a non-profit corporation that targets First Nation youth pursuing careers into the trades.

In January of 2019, educational and political leaders from the CLCFN, located in Treaty 10 territory, expressed profound interest in developing and implementing a high school trades program that would provide youth with project-based learning practices in the nation.

The vision included two fundamental goals for the youth: (1) create realistic pathways towards Journeyman/Red Seal Certification; and (2) improve the First Nations housing conditions on-reserve.

Please join us during the grand opening of the Kanaweyiminan “take care of us” CFS Safe Home on Friday, November, 1, 2024 at 11:00 am on the Canoe Lake Cree First Nation, SK. Hear the passion and pride from our youth as they present the keys to the nation.

“It is important that we give our youth an opportunity to feel connected to our community in a positive way and provide a sense of pride and belonging in completing projects and acquiring the skills and abilities to pursue careers in the trades.”

Wilfred (Little Tom) Iron, Councillor- Education Portfolio
