Second-generation Mustangs commit; former tender Venne commits to NMU

Oct 25, 2024 | 12:16 PM

A couple of familiar names will be on the back of two Melfort Mustang jerseys in the future.

The team has announced that 2007-born forward Lincoln Rogers and 2007-born forward Trey Markus have committed to the club for the 2024-25 season.

Rogers has five goals and six points in 10 games for the U18 AAA Prince Albert Mintos this season, while Markus has three goals and two assists in five games with the U18 AAA Warman Wildcats.

Long-time Melfort fans will recognize their surnames, as they are now second-generation Mustangs.

Lincoln’s father Scott played with the team from 1989 to 1992, while Trey’s dad Todd was a Mustang from 1991 to 1994.

In other Mustangs-related news, former goaltender James Venne has committed to the University of Northern Michigan.

Venne was 77-29-12 with seven shutouts as a Mustang.

His 130 games played and 77 wins are all-time team records, along with his 7453 minutes of time-on-ice and 3350 saves.

The seven regular season shutouts are tied for the franchise record.

Venne posted an impressive 1.99 goals-against-average and a .910 save percentage in his time in blue and green.
