The supervisor of Prince Albert’s safe shelter for women, had tears in her eyes on Thursday as she and her staff welcomed a massive delivery.

Over 60 brightly coloured bags and boxes were dropped off, containing a variety of supplies for the women and children staying there.

The group responsible for the delivery was Canadian Royal Purple which has been busy the past two months collection donations in Prince Albert and Shellbrook. Prince Albert Lodge President Karen Knutson noted there were a number of participating businesses in both communities.

“All of us together, including our members and public, have just been awesome with donations,” she said.

Purple Thursday is the third Thursday of October every year and help raise awareness across the country about the connection that exists between brain injuries and domestic violence.

Globally, one in three women will experience interpersonal violence and, of those, one in eight get a brain injury.

“It happens and its sad to say but women, men, and children all suffer with domestic violence, so it’s important to bring awareness to it,” Knutson said.

This is the third year that members of the Prince Albert and Shellbrook Royal Purple Lodges marked Purple Thursday with donations to help meet the needs of people fleeing violent relationships.

The Safe Shelter can house nine women, plus their children, and is usually at full capacity.

Items in the bags and boxes included hygiene products, colouring books, clothing, mitts and toques, and even shampoo. Shelter supervisor Brenda Lee Pellerin was very grateful for the donation.

“”This helps a lot of ladies, it helps the shelter and we can pass along that joy,” she said.
