Here’s a brief look at the political history of each riding in North Central Saskatchewan and links to candidate profiles.

PRINCE ALBERT—CARLTON

Incumbent Saskatchewan Party MLA Joe Hargrave did not seek re-election. He first took office in 2016. In 2020, he won with 57.68 per cent of the vote.

This riding was held by the NDP from 1991 to 2007, but the Sask Party won by a thin majority of 62 votes in 2007 and has returned Sask Party candidates ever since.

PRINCE ALBERT-NORTHCOTE

Sask Party candidate Alana Ross defeated incumbent NDP MLA Nicole Rancourt in the 2020 general election.

Since 2011, this riding has been one of the most competitive in the province and has changed parties in each general election since 2011 – usually with a margin of less than 260 votes between the Sask Party and the Sask NDP.

SASKATCHEWAN RIVERS

Incumbent Nadine Wilson has held this seat since 2007 when she first took office as a member of the Saskatchewan Party. In 2020, she collected 62.22 per cent of the vote. She resigned from the Saskatchewan Party caucus in 2021 and later helped create the Saskatchewan United Party.

ROSTHERN-SHELLBROOK

The incumbent is Saskatchewan Party leader Scott Moe who first took office as an MLA in 2011. Moe collected 79.54 per cent of the vote in the 2020 Saskatchewan provincial election. This riding has been a Sask Party stronghold since 2003.

CUMBERLAND

The NDP incumbent Doyle Vermette did not seek re-election. Cumberland is the largest electoral district in the province. The riding has a strong history of electing New Democrat MLAs. The closest that the NDP came to losing the riding was in the 2008 by-election, which was narrowly won with 49.73% of the popular vote and a plurality of 164.

BATTLEFORDS

The Sask Party’s Jeremy Cockrill is the incumbent in this riding. He first took office in 2020. Cockrill collected 4,477 votes, winning 66.19 per cent of the vote. The last time the NDP held a seat here was prior to 2011.

MEADOW LAKE

The incumbent is Saskatchewan Party MLA Jeremy Harrison who first took office in 2007. Harrison collected 4,540 votes, winning 71.63 per cent of the vote in the 2020 Saskatchewan provincial election.

CUT KNIFE-TURTLEFORD

The incumbent Ryan Domotor, who sat as an Independent, is not seeking re-election. Cut Knife-Turtleford has elected Saskatchewan Party members since its creation in 2002. It is considered a safe seat for the Saskatchewan Party, and typically returns members of that party with large majorities.

LLOYDMINSTER

This riding but has returned Sask Party members since the 1999 general election. The incumbent is Saskatchewan Party MLA Colleen Young who first took office in 2014. Young collected 3,846 votes, winning 82.41 per cent of the vote in the 2020 Saskatchewan provincial election.

ATHABASCA

Along with the neighbouring constituency of Cumberland, Athabasca is considered one of the safest NDP seats in Saskatchewan. The incumbent, however, is actually a Sask Party MLA. Jim Lemaigre who first took office in 2022, won with 51.3 per cent of the vote in a by-election. This was considered an upset, as the NDP held the riding almost continuously since 1975.

KINDERSLEY -BIGGAR

Kindersley-Biggar is a new constituency for the 2024 election. The incumbent is Sask Party MLA Ken Francis who is not seeking re-election.

BATOCHE

This riding will see a new face as MLA. The Sask Party’s Delbert Kirsch, who was originally elected as MLA for the riding in 2003 and has held the seat ever since, announced he would not be seeking re-election.

CARROT RIVER VALLEY

Considered a Sask Party stronghold, Fred Bradshaw had held this seat since 2007. The 73-year old Bradshaw announced he would not be seeking re-election. In the last provincial election, the Sask Party took 73.9 percent of the vote compared to the second place NDP at 18.9 per cent.

MELFORT

Incumbent MLA Todd Goudy received 77.58 per cent of the vote in the last election for the Sask Party. He first took office in 2018 after Sask Party MLA Kevin Phillips passed away while in office.

HUMBOLDT-WATROUS

This riding will see a new face representing it in the legislature. Saskatchewan Party MLA Donna Harpauer did not seek re-election. She first took office in 1999. Harpauer collected 5,713 votes, winning 72.81 per cent of the vote in the 2020 Saskatchewan provincial election.

KELVINGTON-WADENA

This riding returned MLAs from all three major parties from its creation until 1999. It originally alternated between the New Democrats and Progressive Conservatives, before being won by Liberal MLA June Draude. Draude joined the Saskatchewan Party upon its founding in 1997, and the riding has been held by Saskatchewan Party MLAs since. The Sask Party incumbent Hugh Nurlien did not seek re-election.
