City increases height allowance for six story hotel in The Yard

An application from an as yet unnamed hotel chain, to allow for a taller building in the highway commercial zoning, was met with unanimous consent by Prince Albert city council during a special meeting on Tuesday.

The business model of the chain relies on having a certain number of rooms and that means having six stories instead of the current four stories allowed.

“Council just approved a height change in constructions of motels from 14 metres to 18, because we’re getting another hotel in The Yard district and this hotel will be six stories,” said Mayor Greg Dionne.

He said the bylaw had not been updated for a number of years.

“So anyone in the C4 can now build six stories. It’s really exciting for us because again, its another tax base for us in The Yard,” he said.

The builders have already placed a sign and some pipe on the lots and were waiting for the re-zoning before installing the services.

Dionne said it is exciting to watch the development happening in the district as multiple private developments spring up around the new Lake Country Co-op Leisure Centre.
