The recipients of the annual Sportsman and Athletes of the Year awards from the Prince Albert Kinsmen Club feature a local philanthropist, a hockey star breaking into the NHL, and a young volleyball player making international waves.

Committee chairman for the 2024 event Jared Devers said there were several worthy candidates for the award, but choosing Abby Wasutyk as one of the recipients was easy.

The volleyball player has been on a wild trajectory since picking up the sport in Grade 9 at St. Mary High School.

“The reason she won over the other candidates is based on her commitment to volleyball and obviously being selected nationally in Canada among the top 15 volleyball players. She also went on to compete internationally,” said Devers.

Wasutyk has been training with the Volleyball Canada Women’s National Excellence Program (NEP). Over the summer, she competed with the U19 National Team that travelled to Honduras for the Continental Championships finishing with a silver medal.

The male athlete being recognized this year is Tanner Howe, who has spent his WHL hockey career with the Regina Pats and was most recently drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins.

“When you get a local kid who does very well in the regional level and gets drafted in the NHL by Pittsburgh in the second round makes it a very easy choice for us to select him,” said Devers. “We’re sure he’s going to go on to continue to do great things.”

The Sportsman of the Year honour is being given to Malcolm Jenkins, a local businessman known for his generous donations to various organizations and athletic ventures throughout the community including the Alfred Jenkins Fieldhouse and playgrounds.

“All the work that Malcolm has done to build the sporting community and the city of P.A. has been outstanding. Any local team asking for money, he’ll help them out. I’m just glad that someone nominated him so we could recognize him.”

The annual Kinsmen Sportsman Dinner will take place Oct. 26 at the Art Hauser Centre and will feature special guest and Hockey Hall of Fame inductee Jeremy Roenick.

“He’s been on our radar for a couple years. We think he’ll be a phenomenal speaker as he’s a very personable guy. He’s going to tell us a lot of great stories. He’s actually got 3 or 4 books out. You may love what he says or hate what he says and that little bit of controversy is going to make the event awesome and we’ll get to hear a lot of good stories about his many years in the NHL.”

Proceeds from the event will support the community’s greatest needs.
