Prince Albert helps raise over $200,000 for Make-A-Wish

Four-year-old Mallory Jess was smiling from ear to ear after learning she’s going with her family to Disney World.

The presentation was part of a special fundraiser for Make-A-Wish Canada Saskatchewan that was held Thursday night at the Exhibition Centre in Prince Albert.

“I wanna meet Minnie,” Mallory told paNOW when asked what she was most excited about doing.

At only five months of age, Mallory was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Fortunately, her current treatment is going well, but her mother Cindy acknowledged the road thus far has been long and tough with numerous tests and hospital visits.

“We’re so thankful to make a wish and everything they are doing for our family. She’s doing so well right now but she’s been through so much,” she said.

There’s currently 180 kids in Saskatchewan waiting for a wish and 12 are located in Prince Albert. While trips to Disney World are obviously popular, other wishes includes trips to see their favourite singer, or a new club house in their backyard.

Last night’s fundraiser managed to raise over $200,000, which will help grant 20 wishes. Chapter Director Allyson Toye was thrilled with the response

“I lived here for seven years and I’m proud to say I did and this community always comes out for us and supports us,” she said.

The event, which included a surf and turf dinner, and both a live and silent auction, was put on by the Broda Group, which also contributed $60,000 towards the final total. Toye explained Gord Broda and Rusty Clunie had initially approached her six months ago.

“They said we’ll fill the room and you guys do the rest and they filled the room and beyond,” she said, noting the fact the event had initially been scheduled to be held at the Wildlife Federation Banquet & Event Center, but then due to increased ticket sales, had to move the event to a larger venue.

The Prince Albert Wildlife Federation Banquet & Event Center, along with their community building partners Randy Whitter from My Place Catering, Great Western Brewery, Phantom Light Distilleries, and Lake Country Co-Op, all worked together on the event and provided an “in kind” donation to Make-A-Wish totalling over $6,500.
