Raiders offensive onslaught tames Broncos

After heading to Swift Current to start off the preseason home and home with the Broncos on Thursday, the Prince Albert Raiders welcomed the Broncos to the Art Hauser Centre for the rematch on Saturday night.

While the Broncos did open the scoring, the Raiders would score shortly after and not look back on their way to a 6-1 win.

Neither team found the back of the net in the first period, but the Raiders penalty kill got a chance at redemption after going 2/5 on the penalty kill on Thursday. Not only did they kill off their first penalty, but they’d go on to a perfect 2/2 on the night.

The Raiders also had a powerplay in the first, but didn’t find the back of the net despite outshooting the Broncos.

After 1: Raiders 0 – 0 Broncos, shots 11-6 Raiders

The scoring started with Swift Current breaking in on a 2-on-1, and Dawson Gerwing would try to put a shot on goal. A defender’s stick would block the shot right to Aidan Sexsmith, and he put the puck past Max Hildebrand to give the Broncos the lead at 1:15.

It was all Raiders from that point on. Sexsmith would be charged with interference shortly after next faceoff, and Lukas Dragicevic would set up a nice give and go play with Tomas Mrsic on the blueline before Dragicevic fired a shot on goal. Riley Boychuck got a piece of it tip it past Matthew Kieper to tie the game at 2:08.

Then at 9:16, Brayden Dube got the game winner when Boychuck forechecked into the right position to receive a pass from the Broncos defence in open ice. Boychuck turned and fired, Dube found the rebound, and the Raiders had the lead.

Boychuck would make it 3-1 Raiders at 13:21 when Cole Peardon played the puck out from the corner and it bounced off a Bronco skate towards the slot for Oli Chenier, and he sent the puck to Boychuck waiting for the onetimer on the left side of the slot.

The Raiders scored their final goal of the second at 15:06 when Brock Cripps made a nice play to maneuver around two defenders and hold the blue line before sending a pass to Ethan Bibeau in the slot. His wrist shot bounced off the shin pad of Dayce Derkatch crashing the net and into the net.

After 2: Raiders 4 – 1 Broncos, shots 16-6 Raiders, 27-12 Raiders overall

After an early penalty kill, the Raiders got on the board at the 8:04 mark thanks to Jonah Sivertson. On a simple rush, Ty Sobry sent the puck cross ice for Daxon Rudolph, who dropped it back for Sivertson as he crossed the blueline. He took it to the top of the circle and let go of a wrist shot that was in and out of the back of the net quicker than the rink could react.

Just 39 seconds later, Sivertson scored again when Rudolph took a shot from the point that hit traffic and slowly trickled to the goal. As the pile formed to try and hit the puck in every direction, Sivertson won the battle to hit the empty net.

Final: Raiders 6 – 1 Broncos, shots 20-3 Raiders, 47-15 Raiders overall

The Raiders outshot the Broncos in every period for the second night in a row. Max Hildebrand started the game in goal for the Raiders for the first night, and he stopped eight of nine shots faced. Anderson Cooper stopped all six shots he faced including the best of the night a partial breakaway from Bradey Birnie in the third period.

The Raiders are off for almost a full week before they welcome the Saskatoon Blades back to the Art Hauser Centre for their second competition this preseason.
