Broncos overtake Raiders in second preseason action

Sep 6, 2024 | 9:13 AM

After a successful start to the preseason with a win over the Saskatoon Blades, the Prince Albert Raiders were in Swift Current Thursday night to take on the Swift Current Broncos. While the Raiders opened the scoring early, the Broncos took over for a 5-2 win.

The Raiders got on the board first when Brayden Dube collected the puck on a dump from Justice Christensen. Dube would send a hard pass to the front of the net where Ben Harvey was waiting, and he didn’t waist any time getting the puck in the back of the net for the lead just 3:32 into the game.

The Broncos then took advantage of a Luke Moroz tripping call and scored on the powerplay from Rylan Gould just two minutes later. After that the Broncos would take the lead ten seconds later as Parker Rondeau found the back of the net on a rush to get them ahead.

Brady Birnie of the Broncos would capitalize on the second powerplay of the period when Kyle Obobaifo went to the box for hooking, giving the Broncos a two goal lead with 12:04 played.

After 1: Raiders 1 – 3 Broncos, shots 12-10 Raiders

The first half of the second period was back and forth, with both teams getting chances to score but not finding anything. Halfway through the period, the Raiders would switch Eric Kahl out of the net for Steele Bass

With 8:03 played, the Raiders would get their first powerplay thanks to a hooking call on Broncos Grayson Burzynski. 40 seconds into that powerplay, Cole Peardon would get the puck on the left side of the blueline and rip a wrist shot through traffic and into the back of the net to bring the Raiders back within one with assists from Dayce Derkatch and Norwin Panocha.

After a dust up in front of the Raiders net, Ty Sobry would go to the box with Grayson Burzynski of the Broncos, resulting in 40 seconds of 4-on-4 before Harrison Lodewyk was called for tripping, giving the Broncos a 4-on-3. A rebound would pop out to Connor Hvidston in the slot, and he’d score to give the Broncos their two goal lead back.

The Raiders would get one back on their second powerplay that would be called off due to goaltender interference, but no penalty was issued.

After 2: Raiders 2 – 4 Broncos, shots 15-10 Raiders, 27-20 Raiders overall

The third period would see the Broncos score at the 4:09 mark on the rush when they entered with three quick passes, the final one finding the stick of Brady Birnie who tipped it past an outstretched Steele Bass for the three goal lead once again.

The Raiders would still outshoot the Broncos in the third, but they couldn’t find a way to solve Reid Dyck to tie it and the Broncos would take the win.

FINAL: Raiders 2 – 5 Broncos, shots 11-10 Raiders, 38-30 Raiders overall

Eric Kahl started the game in net for the Raiders, stopping 11 of 14 shots faced in the first half of the game. In the second half, Steele Bass stopped 14 of 16.

The Raiders are off Friday before returning to home ice for a rematch against the Broncos.
