It’s not too late to make the most of camping in Sask. parks

It’s the last long weekend of the summer, and time to make the most of it before we take another cold plunge into winter.

Many people are heading to one of the parks scattered across our province, and according to the province’s Assistant Deputy Minister for Parks Paul Johnson it’s going to be a busy weekend.

“It’s a strong camping weekend for us. Right now we’re at about 60 per cent occupancy, so that means we’ve got lots of spaces left,” said Johnson.

From now to the end of September, people will have the chance to take part in events like Sask Parks Summer Cinema in Candle Lake, where you can enjoy an outdoor movie experience on the big screen under the stars. The movie Migration starts at 8:30 p.m. on August 31. Buffalo Pound Provincial Park will host the same movie on Sept. 7.

On Sept. 7, there will be the Pike Lake and Buffalo Pound Doggy Dip. There will be two sessions held at each park for all dogs to jump into the pool before summer ends.

On Sept. 21, Echo Valley will host guided hikes where participants will be able to explore the Qu’Appelle Valley and enjoy fall crafts and games.

Johnson says fall camping is only growing in popularity.

“Fall camping is some of the most beautiful camping in the province. It’s a little different in September and October — it’s quieter, less busy, maybe there’s a few fewer insects that are biting you — and of course we have the leaves changing colour, so the scenery is fantastic in the fall.”

Park services will be active until the end of September, with water and electricity along with the washrooms.

A promotion is also taking place where campers can save 15 per cent on camping in all parks until the end of September.
