A lot of drivers were caught behaving badly during a recent traffic safety enforcement blitz in Prince Albert.

The local police service collaborated with safety partners from police agencies from across the province and SGI for the Selective Traffic Enforcement Program or STEP initiative that took place for two days starting Aug 20. Officers set up in locations based on an analysis of intersections and areas with a history of collisions.

During the enforcement blitz, a total of 264 drivers received tickets for various infractions:

  • Nine drivers received provincial roadside suspensions after tests indicated the presence of marijuana in their systems.
  • 27 mandatory alcohol screening tests were administered, resulting in four drivers receiving roadside license suspensions.
  • 78 drivers were ticketed for excessive speeds.
  • 35 drivers were fined for using their cellphones while driving.
  • 50 drivers were cited for failing to wear their seatbelts.

A total of 242 drivers were issued written warnings or vehicle equipment regulation inspection citations. Police also inspected 61 car seats and handed out 15 new ones to the public.

Funding for selective traffic enforcement initiatives across the province is provided by SGI.
