Prairie Dogs split opening weekend in SFLL

The Prince Albert Prairie Dogs are 1-1 following the opening weekend of the Saskatchewan Field Lacrosse League (SFLL).

The Dogs downed the Bridge City Blaze in season’s first game on Saturday morning by a 10-8 final score. Later that afternoon, P.A. suffered their first loss of the season to the Sturgis 9-1-1, falling 8-5.

Following the first weekend of play, the club’s head coach Matt Robin said he was satisfied with what he saw on the field.

“We played great,” he said. “There was a lot of kicking off the rust but that was expected. Would’ve been nice to get two [wins] but with a win and a loss, it really gives us an idea of where we’re sitting moving forward and what we need to work on.”

Among the many returning players from last season are more than a handful of new guys who bring a ton of experience to this year’s Prairie Dog squad.

Seven players from the Western Championship winning Prince Albert Predators lacrosse team are on the roster for this season including Tobey Oshanek, Brayden Rieger, Braden Shewchuck, Tayt Beaven, Owen Bear, Talon Sandry, and Mason Hawkes, who is a returning player as well.

Robin said their experience will be a big boost to the team this season and the team is still getting used to the water so to speak.

“The one thing we could work on is guys just getting used to playing together – getting in the groove of playing back together and harmonizing everything. We’ve had some practices, but it’s tough with guys working and trying to fit it in their schedule. It’s a quick season but we usually find a way.”

The Dogs now have two straight bye weeks before the next time they hit the field in Regina. The league will go on hiatus for Labour Day weekend before continuing games the following weekend in Sturgis for the Rural Rumble.

Prince Albert will be back in action on Sept. 14 for the Capital City Clash in Regina, before hosting the Faceoff in the Sticks on Sept. 21 at Max Clunie Field. The Harvest Cup playoff weekend is set for the first weekend in October in Moose Jaw.
