Warrant issued for accused in fatal P.A. collision

A man who was to have been in Prince Albert Provincial Court today now has a warrant for his arrest if he misses his next court appearance.

Bernard Donovan McCallum, 22, was charged with dangerous driving causing death and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death following the collision that took the life of 83-year-old Iris Prokopie.

McCallum did not answer when his name was called in court so a warrant was issued, but will be held until his next court date of September 5.

Judges often issue bench warrants in these types of situations and do not release them until the accused person fails to attend court the second time.

Prokopie was driving a four-door sedan around 3 p.m. on June 11 when it collided with a pickup truck, alleged to be operated by McCallum.

She was on 6th Avenue, attempting to turn east onto 22nd Street when her car was “struck at a high rate of speed by the northbound truck”, according to Prince Albert Police.

She spent almost two weeks in hospital before she passed away, at which time charges against McCallum were upgraded.
