Predators have sights set on Western title at Junior B Championships

Aug 7, 2024 | 1:00 PM

The Prince Albert Predators are looking to add to their already impressive resume this season.

The Club is one of five teams in Brooks, Alta. this week for the Western Canadian Junior B Lacrosse Invitational, better known as the MacDonald Cup. The other teams joining Prince Albert at the tournament are the host Southern Alberta Chaos, Calgary Wranglers, Lakeland Heat, and Swift Current Wolverines.

This year’s tournament is special, as P.A. could be the first team to win the Western Invitational in nearly 30 years. The last time the championship was awarded was in 1995 when the Richmond Roadrunners claimed gold.

The Predators made it to the tournament as the best team from Saskatchewan, having won their second consecutive Prairie Gold Lacrosse League (PGLL) title less than two weeks ago. They defeated Swift Current in this year’s best-of-three finals, 2-0, which capped off an undefeated season for P.A. going 15-0 (includes regular season and playoffs).

The perfect year was only the third in the league’s history.

With an extra spot on the bench, Prince Albert picked up Braxton Mac Angus to help them at the tournament. Coming from Moose Jaw, the 20-year-old just wrapped up his second year with the Mustangs in the PGLL where he finished 18th in league scoring. In just nine games this season, he tallied 27 points (15G, 12A).

In his rookie season last year, Mac Angus managed 37 goals and 18 assists in 13 games, enough to finish fifth in scoring.

Now, the Predators are facing off with some of the best clubs in Western Canada.

Prince Albert will begin their quest for gold at 3 p.m. Wednesday against Calgary. The Wranglers were bronze medalists at the Junior B Tier 2 Provincials this past weekend, downing the Chaos, 5-2.

In their second game on Thursday, the Predators will match up with Swift Current before playing a pair of games on Friday. The first will be against the Lakeland Heat who were crowned Junior B Tier 2 Provincial Champions where they narrowly defeated the Lloydminster XTREME, 5-4. The second will be against Southern Alberta later that evening.

Following the round-robin on Friday, the semifinals will be played on Saturday afternoon while the gold and bronze medal contests are set for Sunday.
