Golfers ready for 103rd Men’s Northern Amateur Championship

Aug 2, 2024 | 6:00 AM

Some of the best golfers from across Saskatchewan are in Prince Albert this weekend for the 103rd Men’s Northern Amateur Championship at Cooke Municipal Golf Course.

Defending Northern Champion Cory Selander will look to continue his dominance at the tournament as he’s searching for his third-straight title, and fourth overall victory.

Last year’s final saw Selander defeat Travis Fehr in a single-hole playoff, which was the first playoff at the Northern Championships since 1996 when Rick Genest downed Colin Coben on the fifth playoff hole.

A third straight win would be the second longest winning streak in the tournament’s history, with the record for dating to the 1930s when George Bigelow won it five straight times from 1934-1938.

Additionally, winning the Northern Championship is in Selander’s blood as his father, Cliff, won it in 1990.

Selander defeated Ashley Ziegeman during his first win in 2019. Then following the pandemic, he toppled Ziegeman in a rematch in 2022 before repeating against Fehr last year.

The 2024 Men’s Northern tees off on Saturday while a champion will be crowned on Monday.
