Successful summer games for Team Lakeland and Team North

The Saskatchewan Summer Games wrapped up on Sunday in Lloydminster, and teams representing the Lakeland and the North both walked away with heads held high.

The teams each won 20 medals.

For Team Lakeland, Tanner Svenson won gold in the special olympics, bocce event. Marcail Phil won gold in the 3000 m race and Corbin Unruh won gold in high jump.

The team’s nine silver medals came in track and field, bocce, swimming, archery and volleyball (female).

Team Lakeland also scored eight bronze medals in softball, athletics, volleyball (male) and basketball.

Team North dominated the canoe and kayaking events, winning four gold medals, 10 silver medals and four bronze.

Suri Cook and Summer Cook, from Pelican Narrows, finished first in both the 200 m and 2000 m events.

Taya Dorion and Tamira McCallum, also from Pelican Narrows, won the female 500 m race. And Moise Cook and Kohen Custer won the 200m male race.

Team North also won a silver in golf (Dade Bernatchez) and a bronze in discus (Zach Merasty).

The summer games ran from July 21 to 27, and featured over 1,800 athletes.

The competition was first held in 1972 to provide an additional opportunity for developing athletes, coaches and officials to join a high-level, multi-sport competition.
