In-custody death case committed for trial

Jul 25, 2024 | 5:00 PM

A court case involving a Prince Albert police officer and allegations of criminal negligence causing death has been formally committed for trial at Court of King’s Bench.

After two days of testimony, and hearing from half a dozen witnesses, Tyson Morash’s preliminary inquiry hearing wrapped up on Thursday at provincial court.

The purpose of the hearing was to hear the Crown’s evidence and determine if there was enough to warrant a trial. Both the evidence heard and the judge’s reasons for committal, are protected by a publication ban.

On Nov. 7, 2021, 33-year-old Saul Laliberte died while in the detention facility at the Prince Albert Police Service (PAPS). His death was treated as an in-custody death and investigated by the Saskatoon Police Service (SPS).

In June of last year, PAPS was notified that based on the SPS investigation, the Crown was recommending charges.

No trial dates have been set.

From day one, the Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations has been following the case closely, and while previously noting concerns with how vulnerable people are being treated while in custody, said Chiefs and leadership are wanting an unbiased proper process that will bring out the truth.
