$90,000 in meth, contraband seized at Sask. Pen

Jul 24, 2024 | 4:05 PM

Officers at the maximum-security unit of the Saskatchewan Penitentiary near Prince Albert seized over $90,000 in methamphetamines and banned goods such as a cellphone, a charger and tobacco recently.

Corrections Canada said the seizure was a result of vigilant correctional officers, a detector-dog team and intelligence officers.

The value of the items is what they are worth in the penitentiary.

Inmates in the maximum-security unit were put on lockdown while staff did a general search on July 16.

Police have been notified and are investigating.

Corrections said they use a number of tools to stop illegal items from getting into the prison such as scanners and dogs which search buildings, personal property, inmates and visitors.

No charges were listed in connection with the incident so far.

CSC has created a tip line for all federal institutions that tipsters can call about security concerns in corrections.

The toll-free number, 1‑866‑780‑3784, helps ensure that the information shared is protected and that callers remain anonymous.

Last December, $450,000 in contraband was seized at the penitentiary and this past January, another seizure was valued at about $170,000.
