STF picks nominee for arbitration panel

Jul 23, 2024 | 12:46 PM

A nominee was chosen for the Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation’s binding arbitration panel.

The arbitration panel will hear submissions on class complexity and wages. The dates for binding arbitration have not been confirmed yet.

Dawn Harkness was named as the bargaining committee’s nominee. She is a recently retired teacher and principal from Saskatoon Public Schools. Currently, she works as a sessional lecturer and intern teacher supervisor for university education programs.

Both sides agreed to nominate Daniel Ish as arbitrator. He is a former law professor for the University of Saskatchewan and dean of the College of Law.

Greg Chatlain, the former director of education for Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools, is the government-trustee bargaining committee nominee for the panel.

Last month, the committee agreed to participate in binding arbitration on their key issues. A decision was made by STF members that binding arbitration was the path forward to a new collective agreement.

Both sides will submit written positions and make presentations on the two issues. The panel will then weigh those presentations. The arbitrator’s decision will be a legally binding written report. Awards through the process will be part of the provincial collective bargaining agreement.
