The City of Prince Albert has been named Saskatchewan’s most active community in the 2024 ParticipACTION Community Challenge.

The Challenge is a national physical activity and sport initiative that encourages everyone in Canada to get active throughout June in search of Canada’s Most Active Community. The winning community was awarded $100,000 to support local physical activity and sport initiatives.

“Congratulations to the community of Prince Albert for being named Saskatchewan’s most active community,” Minister of Parks, Culture and Sport Laura Ross said.

“We all win when our communities become more physically active. ParticipACTION’s Community Challenge inspires and encourages families, seniors, adults and youth to become more physically active and we are very proud of everyone’s efforts.”

During the Challenge, 11 different organizations in Prince Albert registered 164 activities, programs and events that welcomed 6,558 participants.

“Through Prince Albert’s involvement in this initiative, it easily gave recognition to the fact that sports, recreation and physical activity is a foundational piece to this community,” said Robin Mkangwana, City of Prince Albert Recreation Programmer.

“We have a plethora of sports and recreation organizations, we at the City of Prince Albert offer a variety of programs and services at our facilities, and in June particularly, there are major community-based events ran by local organizations that encompass the essence of physical activity almost daily.”

For being crowned the province’s most active community, P.A. was awarded a $15,000 prize funded by the Government of Saskatchewan and ParticipACTION. Meanwhile, Hay River, N.W.T. was awarded the $100,000 grand prize and was named Canada’s most active community.

The other provincial winners included Red Deer, Alta., Richmond, B.C., Snow Lake, Man., Timmins, Ont., Quebec City, Que., Salisbury, N.B., Truro, N.S., Three Rivers, P.E.I., Carbonear, N.L., Iqaluit, Nvt., and Whitehorse, Y.T.
