SHA: Bomb Threat at Saskatoon’s RUH and children’s hospital

Jul 17, 2024 | 12:38 PM

Update at 2:55p.m.: An active Code Black at Saskatoon’s Royal University Hospital and Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital Emergency Department has ended.

Saskatoon Police said shortly after the incident concluded that they were called for a report of a man in a vehicle who was possibly armed with a bomb outside of the ambulance bay at 11:30 am.

After several hours of lockdown, they determined the 47-year-old man did not have any explosive device and negotiated with him to leave the vehicle.

When he did, he was arrested under the Mental Health Services Act without issue.

No items of concern were found in the vehicle.

The SHA said “Patient and staff access for emergency services, appointments and shifts will resume as planned, and regular traffic flow has resumed at the site. Patients with impacted appointments will be contacted directly for alternate arrangements.”

Holbein resident Farrah Whitstone was in the hospital visiting her mother who is recovering from surgery when the initial alarm was sounded.

“The first sign I heard was Code Black and then from there I asked the nurse on what their protocol is of that code and from there I just got really worried,” Whitstone said.

She was waiting in the lounge area to see her mother and could see a lot of protective services personnel, police officers and fire trucks.

She was told to leave that area as it is near the ambulance bay, where the threat is centralized and go to the sixth floor.

“I’m just worried because my mom’s still downstairs and I’m not allowed to see her,” Whitstone said.

A person identifying themselves as a registered nurse, and who was inside the building, confirmed through social media she and her fellow staff members were okay.

“They are not letting anyone in or out of the hospital at this time. The threat is in the Ambulance Bay at JPCH. We were told if they call a code green we need to evacuate but at this time we are safe up in our room. Thanks to everyone for checking on us. I will update when it’s all clear to ease your worries,” she said.

The woman then went on to state, she was told by a security guard the person of interest is at the ambulance bay doors and was threatening to blow himself up, his car and anything in the area.

At this time, police have not confirmed if any arrests have been made.
