Creighton/Denare Beach residents asked to register at evac. centre

Jul 15, 2024 | 4:47 PM

Residents of Creighton and Denare Beach, Saskatchwan and Flin Flon, Manitoba are being urged to pre-register with their municipal government for potential evacuation.

The Wilson Fire, which started last Wednesday, stands at 330 hectares as of today, but is still of concern because of how close it is to Creighton.

The fire was not contained as of Monday but was being fought by two helicopters and 40 firefighters on the ground.

They are focussed on the east, north and south flanks of the fire.

The Town of Creighton is providing a clear air shelter at the Sportex Arena.

On Thursday, the Mayor of Creighton confirmed the fire was between five and seven miles from the town and was also close to Highway 106, the only road between Creighton and Highway 55, which would take evacuees to Prince Albert.

Alternatively, they could drive east to Flin Flon then head to Winnipeg.

All three of the communities, which are in close proximity to each other, issued evacuation alerts the following day. While this is not an evacuation, people should be prepared to leave suddenly if conditions change, said all three municipalities.

Being pre-registered makes things much smoother if an evacuation is needed.

The fire has not shown any significant growth over the weekend, but temperatures in Saskatchewan were a bit cooler and wetter with some rain falling.

That is now set to change as the mercury is expected to rise back into the 30s and no clouds are forecast.
