Police impersonators stop vehicle on Onion Lake Cree Nation: RCMP

A group of police impersonators wearing balaclavas stopped a vehicle on the Onion Lake Cree Nation this week.

According to the RCMP, the impersonators’ vehicle was a black SUV equipped with red and blue emergency lights, and the people inside were wearing “black balaclavas and tactical gear,” though the Mounties noted that their outfits didn’t resemble RCMP uniforms.

Police said the impersonators demanded ID from the occupants after stopping the vehicle, but the people inside had questions of their own.

“The occupants questioned the individuals’ identification and accreditation and were not provided clear answers as to who they were,” the RCMP said in a statement. “The motorists were able to continue on their way after the encounter.”

Police impersonation is illegal, the Mounties noted.

“We ask that anyone being followed by what they believe to be an imitation police vehicle contact RCMP immediately. If you’ve been pulled over or encountered the individuals described above, please contact RCMP.”

The Mounties reminded the public that they can request identification from RCMP officers, and anyone who has concerns during a traffic stop can ask to see an officer’s badge and ID card, which will show a photo and the same regimental number on both the card and badge.

“If you have further concerns, when it is safe to do so, call the RCMP to verify the identity of the officer or individual involved,” the RCMP advised.

The deadliest mass shooting in Canada’s history was committed by a police impersonator.

In April of 2020, Gabriel Wortman killed 22 people and injuring three others in Nova Scotia while dressed as an RCMP officer and driving a replica RCMP cruiser. He was ultimately shot dead by police.

Saskatchewan has also seen several cases of police impersonation.
