‘The pain is deep and it’s killing my family’: Nykera Brown murder case committed for trial

Jul 5, 2024 | 1:00 PM

A man accused of killing his girlfriend has been formally committed to stand trial on a charge of second-degree murder.

Andrew Rosenfeldt’s preliminary inquiry hearing was held on Wednesday at Saskatoon Provincial Court. The case now goes to Court of King’s Bench and a pre-trial hearing date has been scheduled for July 19.

That’s when lawyers and court staff will meet and begin discussion for setting trial dates.

On Nov. 15, 2022, police in Saskatoon were called to a residence in the 1100 block of Ave. P. South. That’s where 20-year-old Nykera Brown was found deceased.

Rosenfeldt was arrested the same day and charged with second-degree murder. A not-guilty plea was entered in February of last year.

At the time of her death, Brown had been living in Saskatoon for about six months. Prior to that she lived in Wakaw.

Nykera’s mother Cathleen Brown has made it to every court date and was asked by paNOW how she feels about the potential of sitting through a trial.

“I feel that the truth will be told. Even after all their ugly lies. My daughter will get the justice she deserves. I have been fighting for it for almost two years,” she said.

The mother also mentioned every time the family goes to court, it hurt, and represents another reminder Nykera is gone.

“The pain is deep and it’s killing my family. The last preliminary has caused so much pain with my girls, her grandmother, her friends and me. I feel this is not needed to have to go to court 33 times just to have them decide if they should go to trial,” she said.

A walk in honour of Nykera was held last weekend in Saskatoon and attracted nearly 200 participants. Among the various speakers was the City’s police chief who discussed changes to their domestic violence protocols.
