Brent Zbaraschuk announces run for Ward 4 seat

Jun 28, 2024 | 11:21 AM

One person has said they will run for the seat being vacated by long time councillor Don Cody this fall.

Brent Zbaraschuk announced his candidacy late yesterday and said he has experience as a former reeve and on the library board and was president of the East End Community Club.

His approach to council would be a ‘common sense’ one and allow taxpayer voices to be heard and acted on.

Zbaraschuk released a four plank platform, with the number one item as economic development.

“Economic development opportunities must be the driver of our tax-base as there is a limited number of revenue streams for our city,” he said. “I am not in favour of always going back to the ratepayers for property tax increases as the sole source of improving our city/ We must live within our means.”

His second priority is to work on a crime reduction strategy involving all levels of government, something the current council has been working on for almost a year.

“We must remember this isn’t a policing issue. This is a provincial and federal government responsibility as they control the program funding and have increased legislative authority to deal with these issues facing Prince Albert.”

Zbaraschuk his third concern is making sure the city has a second fire hall built and fourthly, committed to working with other city councillors, administration and staff.

“Not every decision should result in a predictable vote,” he said.

He also thanked Cody for his time in public service and willingness to serve others.

So far, no other candidates have announced their intention to run in Ward 4.

In Ward 6, incumbent Blake Edwards will run again as will fellow councillor Dawn Kilmer in Ward 7. Tony Head, incumbent in Ward 3 is also hoping to be back in his seat in the fall.

Two names have declared for the mayor’s chair, Greg Dionne and Bill Powalinsky.
