Sierzycki joins Sask. Marshal Service as executive director of operational support

Thomas Sierzycki, a former mayor of La Ronge, will be relocating to Prince Albert as he joins the Saskatchewan Marshal Service as the executive director of operational support.

“Oftentimes, you don’t get to have an opportunity in a career where you are building something new, being part of that, assisting and being supportive of that venture, so extremely excited,” he said.

“I’m very excited for our family as well, and it is a new chapter in our lives, so I’m looking forward to it.”

Sierzycki began the new position on May 1 after a competitive hiring process and is no longer employed as the northern advisor for the Ministry of Education. He described the last couple of months as busy as he conducts stakeholder engagement, policy creation, governance and hiring of staff.

Sierzycki also called it a positive experience being surrounded by the men and women who are already employed by the service, noting they are passionate about it and about serving Saskatchewan.

Sierzycki has nearly a decade of public service experience in senior leadership roles with the Government of Saskatchewan. He also has previous experience in the private sector with Orano Canada and working with La Ronge Emergency Medical Services and the La Ronge Regional Fire Department.

He has extensive board governance experience, as well as a Bachelor of Education, Masters in Northern Governance and Development, and a Masters in Public Administration. He was mayor of La Ronge from 2009 to 2016 and unsuccessfully ran for Cumberland MLA for the Sask. Party in 2016 too.

While Chief Marshal Rob Cameron and Deputy-Chief Marshal Richard Lowen will be in charge of the policing aspect of the new marshal service, Sierzycki will be responsible for operational support aspects like the civilian membership of the police force.

“What’s beneficial for me is my background in emergency services and fire, and working with the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency as an emergency protection officer in my previous role with the Ministry of Education, so an understanding of how critical incidents management works, how emergency response works, so a lot of these things are transferrable,” he said.

Sierzycki and his family plan to move from La Ronge this summer. He added the community will always be home and his heart is with the good people of La Ronge.

“I’m looking forward to the next phase of life and the opportunities,” Sierzycki said.

“Great opportunities for my family, but we will always stay connected to La Ronge and definitely I look forward to staying in touch and working with La Ronge in various capacities.”
