Hundreds of Sask. drivers ticketed for failing to stop or yield: SGI

Hundreds of drivers in Saskatchewan were struggling with red lights, stop signs and yield signs in May.

According to SGI, police around the province handed out 451 tickets to drivers who failed to stop or yield last month.

“Imagine a world where all drivers ignored red lights, stop signs or yield signs. Each intersection would be anarchy – a chaotic mess that would be dangerous for anyone who ventured near it,” SGI said in a statement.

“Fortunately, we live in a world where most drivers heed that very basic rule of driving: paying attention to traffic control devices. Most, but not all of them.”

Failing to stop at a red light or stop sign, or failing to yield to pedestrians carries a $230 fine, the Crown insurer noted.

“Nearly half of all collisions occur at intersections; it’s important to obey stop signs, yield signs and red lights,” SGI added.

During May, police also caught 459 impaired drivers, leading to 298 licence suspensions for exceeding provincial limits and 161 Criminal Code charges.

May also saw police hand out 353 seatbelt or car seat tickets, 604 tickets for distracted driving – including 505 for using a cell phone – and 1,155 tickets for speeding or aggressive driving.
