Saskatchewan highway hay salvage and mowing dates released

Jun 20, 2024 | 3:10 PM

Farmers and ranchers are being reminded about some key dates as the annual highways hay salvage and ditch mowing clips along for the season.

Landowners or lessees adjacent to a highway ditch have the first option to cut or bale free hay prior to and including July 8.

After July 8, anyone may cut or bale material without the permission of the nearby landowner or lessee, if mowing is not already being done.

All hay bales must be removed from ditches by Aug. 8, or they may be removed and disposed of at the discretion of the Ministry of Highways.

The mowing program reduces snow drifting on the highway surface during the winter, improves the visibility of signs, and safer intersections by maintaining acceptable sight distances.

It is also an effective method for controlling brush and noxious weed growth.

The Ministry of Highways will deliver the mowing program with the assistance of contractors and work with local rural municipalities until the end of Fall. Roughly 100,000 acres will be mowed this year.
