City closes Little Red Park as flooding threatens

Jun 19, 2024 | 4:21 PM

High water anticipated to arrive in the next day or so from further north has led the City of Prince Albert to close Little Red River Park.

City staff said that the core area of the park will be closed Wednesday at 10 pm and remain closed until further notice.

The public will not be able to access the park from the the Pine Grove entrance gate on the west or the main entrance off Highway 55.

“The Park is anticipating bank flow and flooding possibilities due to the increased outflow over the next couple of days,” said the city in a news release the afternoon of June 19.

The Saskatchewan Water Security Agency issued a warning earlier that morning that followed one a day earlier after increasing the output flow from the dam at Anglin Lake

Water levels at the lake are nine inches higher than safe levels and the dam needed to be opened in order to maintain the integrity of the dam.

High water levels are the result of a very rainy spring in Prince Albert and northern Saskatchewan.

The city said that as of June 19, WSA has advised them that outflows are approaching what was last observed in 2013.

“As a precaution and to ensure the safety of our guests and users of the park the City finds it necessary to restrict all access to the public until the threat has subsided and it is considered safe to allow the public back into the space,” said the release.

The situation will be monitored daily and the public is asked to keep safety in mind and avoid the area.
