Dominican Republic, Australia clinch spots in 2025 Men’s Softball World Cup

Jun 18, 2024 | 5:00 PM

The first two spots at the WBSC 2025 Men’s Softball World Cup in Prince Albert have been claimed following the Group A qualifying tournament in Hermosillo, Mexico over the weekend.

The Dominican Republic and the defending World Champions Australia are the first two countries to secure their spot at the World Cup following a weekend of upsets and surprises.

The Dominicans claimed first at the tournament after finishing second in round robin play, boasting a 3-2 record. Since finishing second, they auto-advanced to the finals along with Venezuela who finished first with a perfect 5-0 record.

Despite the flawless preliminary record, the Venezuelans were blanked on the scoreboard as the Dominican Republic punched their ticket to the World Cup with a 2-0 win. The loss, however, didn’t spark the end for Venezuela as they had a second chance in the repechage and would face the winner of the tournament’s semi-final contest.

In the semi-final contest, Australia downed Mexico, 4-1 and the Aussies continued to roll into the repechage where they toppled Venezuela by an identical 4-1 score, clinching the second World Cup spot.

With two spots now taken, four of the spots will be decided following the Group B and C qualifying tournaments where the winners of the finals and the repechage from either tournament will advance to the World Cup. The final two tickets are reserved for one of the two third-place teams with the best record.

The Group B qualifying tournament is set to get underway in Prince Albert from July 10-14 and will feature Canada, Argentina, New Zealand, Singapore, Israel and Hong Kong, China.

The Group C qualifying tournament is slated for Sept. 17 to 21 in Oklahoma City, USA and will feature the United States, Japan, Guatemala, Colombia, South Africa, and the Netherlands.

The Group A qualifying tournament also included Czechia and the Philippines in addition to Mexico, Australia, Venezuela, and the Dominican Republic.
