A Grade 12 student from Carlton High School is getting a substantial financial boost ahead of his high school graduation.

Sahas Mittal is the recipient of two major scholarships. First, he’s won the Schulich Leader Award which is worth $120,000. He’s also received the Chancellor’s Scholarship worth $30,000.

The money will go toward a four-year engineering program next year that Sahas Mittal is pursuing at the University of Saskatchewan.

“They’re both kind of focused on leadership, entrepreneurship, being involved in the community,” said Mittal. “In school I’m the president of the robotics club, and I also occasionally volunteer with the Student Leadership Council.”

Mittal is also heavily involved in the air cadets.

“I have received the highest rank in the air cadets…and so I’m a leader through that and I help the officers in my squadron run all of the activities and the events that happen,” he said. “Last summer I went for my glider pilot scholarship. And this summer I’ll be going for my power pilot (scholarship).”

Mittal has also volunteered at the Navy League, helping younger cadets.

He said the scholarship money will be a huge help in his immediate future.

“They mean a lot because before getting the scholarships I was ready to work part-time during my university, and I was also saving money working a job,” Mittal said. “It was going to be tough because engineering over the course of four years is quite expensive, so getting the scholarships means I don’t have to work during university…I can just focus solely on my studies and any projects and any ambitions that I pursue during my four years.”

Mittal said he plans to major in mechanical engineering and eventually start his own engineering-based business.

Many students in the Prince Albert area are receiving scholarships right now, including Grade 12 student Lily Bair from Muskoday First Nation, who was named one of only 20 recipients of this year’s RBC Future Launch Indigenous Youth Scholarship, which is worth $10,000 per year for up to four years.
