Officially summer: Kinsmen Waterpark, spray parks set to open for season

As the weather continues to warm up in Prince Albert, the Kinsmen Waterpark and many of the local spray parks beginning to open for the summer.

The Kinsmen Waterpark is set to open on Friday afternoon while the spray parks are slated to open during the week of June 17.

With the Waterpark set to welcome guests this weekend, Prince Albert’s Parks and Open Spaces Manager Tim Yeaman said it’s been all hands on deck to get the pool ready for the season.

“The crews have been working hard to get all of the maintenance and get the pool up and operating,” he explained. “Everything looks good, the park staff were in to do all of the regular maintenance to the landscaped areas, so I think everything is looking good – very promising.”

As for the spray parks, they needed a little more T.L.C.

Last summer, the City was forces to temporarily close two of their spray parks, Crescent Heights and Lions Park, because vandals destroyed some of the park’s main components. Yeaman said that all damages have since been repaired and the parks are operational, adding that the costs of the fixes weren’t paid with pocket change.

“All repairs have been completed, and we actually ordered in a few extra parts so we’re not caught off guard,” he said. “We’re hoping that the public will work with us and report any damage that they do see, and also take some ownership of the spray parks that are out there, as well as the playgrounds.”

“Some of the damage that was done was to the control buttons – control pads themselves,” he continued. “Unfortunately when those get damaged, it’s not always necessarily replacing electronics but it’s replacing the pedestal that goes with it. The loss on those spray parks was around $5,000, and one of the particular control systems that was vandalized, we had to close it down entirely for around three weeks, and the cost of that controller itself was $10,000.”

“In total, it was a loss of about $15,000 because of vandalism.”

The spray parks are of course free to use to public during certain hours of the day but for the Waterpark, people will need to pay to get in.
