The federal government is providing funding to help improve genetic evaluation tools for Canadian beef and dairy cattle.

Genetic selection tools accurately predict traits that benefit the environment and respond to consumer preferences. With the development of these tools, the challenge of collecting large volumes of data and managing that data has increased.

The Canadian Angus Association will receive $1.6 million to lead this project.

CAA will use cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, camera and computer vision systems to capture large volumes of accurate data on traits that impact animal health and welfare, and environmental sustainability.

This research work will provide beef and dairy producers with knowledge on genetic selection and support the development of new systems and technologies to further advance breeding tools.

The Canadian Women Entrepreneur in Industry recognized the CEO and Founder of CATTLEytics Sharu Van de Pol with the Total Mom Inc. Tech for Good Award” for Advancing the Dairy Industry and the Welfare of its Animals.

CATTLEytics Dairy Health and Management System is the control centre for a dairy operation and focuses on agricultural efficiency and sustainability for dairy operations through the development of hardware, software, and system solutions designed by a team of veterinarians, software developers, and hardware engineers.

Two Alberta agriculture equipment dealerships are joining forces. Agland and Martin Deerline are merging operations.

Cam Kay will continue to lead the overall business as CEO of the newly formed entity, Horizon Ag & Turf.

“The partnership is a significant step forward in our strategy to continue to build a strong, relevant business that focuses on taking care of our staff, our customers, and our suppliers, the three pillars of our business,” Kay said. “We both have a long successful history in the Agricultural, Construction and Turf businesses, and this is a natural move forward for us.”

The merger is scheduled to take effect July 31 subject to necessary approvals and due diligence.
