RCMP nab wanted Ahtahkakoop man after drone search

Jun 4, 2024 | 10:51 AM

A man wanted for missing court appearances on previous charges of aggravated assault, gun charges and fleeing from police is back behind bars after a drone search on Ahtahkakoop First Nation.

The RCMP Warrant Enforcement and Suppression Team (WEST) went to a home in the community on May 23 to arrest 32-year-old Lanny Joseph on his old charges but had to pursue the suspect once again.

Police said that when they got to the residence, the suspect resisted arrest and fled on an ATV and refused to stop when officers activated their lights.

Officers opted not to pursue at the time out of concerns for public safety. Instead, they used the Remote Piloted Aircraft System (drone) to search the area.

After six days, the suspect was found and arrested in a home in the community.

Joseph is now further charged with another count of fleeing from police and resisting arrest and made his court appearance on June 3.

The last time Joseph was arrested, it was while police were investigating a different man wanted for attempted murder. The two cases are not connected, said RCMP.
